Prayers for Christian Unity in Tripoli

Published January 31, 2014 by

As part of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the different Christian Denominations in Tripoli, Libya, organised three prayer meetings together.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, celebrated between the 19th and 25th of January, this year was focused on the question taken from the First Letter to the Corinthians:  “Is Christ divided?”  All resources were prepared by an ecumenical group in Canada.

There are six Christian Denominations in Tripoli:  the Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, the Coptic-Orthodox Church, the Greek-Orthodox Church, the Union Church and the Evangelical Christian Fellowship.

The first prayer meeting was celebrated in the Anglican Church of Christ the King in the Old City  on Sunday 19th January;  the second, on Wednesday 22nd January, was celebrated at the Union Church premises;  the 3rd prayer meeting was celebrated at San Francesco Catholic Church on Saturday 25th January.

The Ecumenical Service in San Francesco Catholic Church was led by Bishop Giovanni Martinelli OFM, Apostolic Vicar of Tripoli, together with the Franciscan Friars and the Filipino Choir.  The different leaders of the Churches each gave a short reflection.  In his homily Fr. Marcello Ghirlando OFM stressed the importance of the common faith in Jesus that binds Christians together;  he recalled Pope Francis’ words who invited all Catholics to look and learn from what is positive in the other Christian Churches.
