Vicar Genaral for Comayagua Diocese

On the 27th November, his Excellency Mons. Robert Camilleri OFM, Bishop of Comayagua, Honduras, Central America, nominated Fr Joe Bonello OFM as Vicar General of the Diocese.
Fr. Joe has been in the missions, particularly in the parish of Santa Ana, at La Libertad in Honduras for these last twenty-one years.

Fr. Joe Bonello OFM

Born in Xaghra, Gozo, Malta on the 4th April 1961, he entered the Order on the 2nd October 1977. Made solemn profession on the 28th August 1983 and was ordained on the 7th July 1985. After serving as Master of Postulants for three years he left for the missions in Honduras.

The Diocese of Comayagua was erected on the 13th March 1963. According to the 2006 census the population at that time was 689.725 of which 642,254 were Catholic that is 93.1% of the total population of the Diocese. It has 29 parishes with 44 priests diocesan and religious, meaning a priest for ever 14,596 parishioners.

The actual Bishop, also from the Maltese Franciscan province, Mons. Robert Camilleri, was installed as Bishop of the Diocese on the 21st May 2004. Apart from Mons. Camilleri and Fr. Joe, in Honduras there are also another two Maltese Franciscans, Fr. Angelo Falzon OFM from Naxxar who has been in this mission for these last twenty-four years at the moment serving at the Parish at La Paz and Fr. Albert Gauci OFM from Gharghur who is also the Vicar General of the Diocese of Olancho and who has been in Honduras for more than 30 years.
