St. Clement of Rome –  First Epistle to the Corinthians (+90 AD ca.)

Chapter XXIV. There will be a resurrection – God shows us this through nature.

…..Let us consider, beloved, how the Lord continually shows us that there shall be a future resurrection, of which He has rendered the Lord Jesus Christ the first-fruits by raising Him from the dead. Let us meditate, beloved, the resurrection which is at all times taking place around us. Day and night declare to us a resurrection.

The night sinks to sleep, and the day arises; then again, the day departs, and the night takes place. Let us behold the fruits [of the earth], how the sowing of grain takes place. The sower goes forth, and casts it into the ground; and the seed being thus scattered, though dry and naked when it fell upon the earth, is gradually dissolved. Then out of its dissolution the mighty power of the providence of the Lord raises it up again, and from one seed many arise and bring forth fruit…….

Note : Clement of Rome is listed as the third bishop after St. Peter i.e. Linus, Anacletus and Clement. With regard to his predecessors little is known about them. We have news about Clement through a letter he wrote to the Church of Corinth that was engaged in internal trouble. Clement recommends Unity and Love. His paternal, and at the same time fraternal expressions, explain such virtues as the ones that should occupy all the life of the Church and the Christian community. This letter was highly valued by the Corinthians in such a way that it was read regularly during celebrations.

Reflection : In line with the Pauline teachings, if we do not believe in Jesus Christ’s resurrection, in vain would be our faith. But the resurrection of Christ is also thought about through nature. The same nature that surrounds us demonstrates the seed of the resurrection sowed in the life of humanity. We also experience the Resurrection of Christ when  we feel renewed and converted in our lives, or when we experience the majesty of God’s richness in mercy and feel His forgiveness, especially in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confessions). We thoroughly feel we entered a new life of grace, with the peace of mind and soul, in love with God and our neighbour. We can experience and live this change in our lives because Jesus Christ redeemed us through his passion, death and resurrection. Faith brings us the healing power of God.

Creed: ……. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended in heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

Prayer : ….. St. Francis’ Prayer Before the Crucifix

Most high,
glorious God,
let your light fill the shadows of my heart
and grant me, Lord,
true faith,
certain hope,
perfect love,
awareness and knowing,
that I may fulfill Your holy will.  AMEN.
