The Provincial Commission for JPIC

peacedove.jpgThe first meeting of the provincial JPIC commission was held on Friday the 29th of July 2005 at 10.30am at the provincial curia in Valletta. Present for the meeting were the commission members, namely Fr. Paul Galea ofm, Minister Provincial, fr. Dionysius Mintoff ofm and Fr. Richard Stanley Grech ofm.

During the meeting, Fr. Dionysius gave an evaluation of the present situation and informed those present that he was often asked by the other Maltese Franciscan provinces, ofm conv. and ofm cap., to respresent them in meetings on JPIC, both in Malta and abroad, as they had no one directly responsible to do so. It was decided that the Minister Provincial contacts the other Ministers Provincial and encourage them to appoint someone to remedy the situation. This would offer us the opportunity to work together in harmony for the cause of JPIC and consequently do witness in solidarity.

Fr. .Dionysius also proposed that a bookmark drawing competition be held in Summer schools on St. Francis and the animals. The winning entry would then be published and distributed among all students in primary schools. The other entries could then be put on exhibition and the winning student be rewarded during Animal Awareness Day 2005.

It was also decided that the members of the Provincial Commission for JPIC visit the fraternities during the monthly retreats to help create and foster and awareness towards JPIC, starting first and foremost with the local and provincial fraternities.

On Monday the 1st of August 2005, another meeting was held at 11.00am at the provincial curia Valletta. Present for this meeting were the members of the Provincial Commission for JPIC and Mr. Chris Duckett Development Coordinator of Franciscan sInternational in Geneva, Switzerland. He was in Malta on holiday, and wanted to meet us before he left. The object of the meeting was to inform us of the work for JPIC that the Franciscans International were doing. He was very pleased to meet Fr. Dionysius, whom he had talked to on the phone several times previously but never had the pleasure to meet personally. Franciscans International was the brain child of Fr. Dionysius who is considered to be its founder. He mentioned that Franciscans International is working for the betterment of all those persons who were suffering any form of religious, ethnic, political, social, etc.  discrimination. There is at present a number of male and female Franciscans, both lay and religious who are  offereing their services to help create an awareness in governments and politicians of different countries on issues pertaining to JPIC. It was then up to these to form policies and legislations to safeguard the inalienable rights and duties of one and all.

Mr. Duckett was pleased to know of the efforts that the Maltese Franciscan Province together with the Education division was making in schools to foster JPIC. At the end of the meeting Mr. Duckett left some printed material that gave a clear picture of the different issues and initiatives carried out by FI in aid of JPIC.
