Sta. Maria Convoy Celebrated

apost_maris.jpgOn the 14th of August, the Apostolatus Maris celebrated the 65th Anniversary of the Santa Maria Convoy. The Port Chaplain, Fr. Paul Attard OFM and the Council Members celebrated the Wreath Laying Ceremony under the patronage of the Archbishop of Malta, Mgr Paul Cremona. This ceremony is celebrated every year at the Grand Harbour in Valletta.

On the 15 of August of 65years ago the Tanker ‘Ohio’ arrived in Grand Harbour at 9:30 AM to cheering crowds. The convoy is known as “Il-Konvoj ta Santa Marija” because it arrived on St. Mary’s feast day and saved Malta from the dire straits of hunger, which would have meant a surrender during the most crucial moment of the Second World War.
