On Thursday 29th October he visited the priests' rest house ‘Christus Sacerdos’ at Birkirkara where he had the opportunity to chat with our friars who are currently residing there. After this visit he proceeded to Balzan where he had a meeting with the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM). At one time, during the execution of his programme for this day, a definitory was held at the convent in Sliema. In the evening a thanksgiving Mass was held at the same friary, were Frs Joseph and Walter were given the ministry of the Acolyte. In his message which was addressed to all the friars of the congregation present, he stressed on the importance of the Gospel episode where, during his ministry, Jesus told the blind man: ‘Get up and walk’.

The visit of the General Minister continued on Wednesday 28thOctober with a day full of visits and various invitations. The visits on Wednesday began at the Poor Clares following: The Peace Lab, and the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Jesus. In the afternoon he led a formation council at the Valletta Convent and met the Fraternity, following a visit to Commissariat of the Holy Land. After words, he was given a guided tour of the Provincial Archives by Father George Aquilina. In the evening, the General Minister met with all the friars of the Province at our Porziuncola Retreat House at Baħar Ic-Cagħaq where he stressed on the importance of the last document of the General Chapter: ‘Bearers of the Gift of the Gospel’s outlines’.

On the 27th October, the Minister General Fr. José Rodriguez Carballo OFM, together with Fr. Francis Walter, the English speaker ‘definitor’ arrived in Malta early in the afternoon for a three day visit. They were welcomed by the Minister Provincial Fr. Sandro Overend OFM and the Vicar Provincial Fr. Richard S. Grech OFM. On their arrival they were escorted to our Sliema Convent where he will be residing during his stay in Malta. After meeting with the Sliema Fraternity, the Minister General was taken to meet the Hamrun Fraternity, where a congregation had gathered to meet him. The Minister General gave a brief speech. Also present for this occasion were the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary together with the Hamrun OFS group.

As part of the celebrations of the 800 years since the approval of the Franciscan Rule, the whole Franciscan Family organised a ‘Franciscan Walk’ for youth. The walk started at 9.30am on the 25th October from Sarria Church Floriana. It then proceeded to the Capuchins’ church for the celebration of the Eucharist. After Mass, the walk proceeded to the Poor Clares in St. Julian where the nuns showed some of the work they do in their monastery. (more…)
